Eating can be so much fun! And Peploe’s is synonymous with culinary pampering. There’s a classy atmosphere in this professionally-run business restaurant, at least during the very cool greeting guests receive. The service is pleasant and professional, the spaces are nicely lit, the vibe also suited to long, meandering conversations. Nothing gives any indication that an old steel-reinforced safe had to be blown apart with special explosives before the restaurant could open in 2003. The highlight however, is the outstanding international brasserie cuisine with an Italian twist. The chef, Sebastian Scheer, arrived in Dublin via Hannover, the German Rheingau wine region and London and hits the mark with a menu that is polished yet not overdone. For appetisers the Brie aux Filo with Pruneaux d’Agen (8,50 Euro) is as pleasing as the Carpaccio of Irish Beef with Artichokes & Parmesan (12,50 Euro), or the Sauté Squid with Aromatic Spices, Coriander & Cucumber Salad (12,50 Euro). Fish lovers should not miss out on the Baked Whole Seabream with Plum Tomatoes & Potatoes, Vermouth & Cromone Bay Cockles (24,50 Euro), while carnivores will love the Dry-Aged Irish Rib-Eye Steak Chargrilled with Crispy Onions, Home Made Steak Sauce & Chipped Potatoes (29,50 Euro). And the delicious Hot Chocolate Fondant is a dessert worth saving a bit of room for. A further highlight is the comprehensive wine list. All the wines are purchased directly from the producers: Burgundy, Rhone, Bordeaux and Italy are all represented – as well as Spain in the near future. Diners can choose from a generous 24 wines by the glass, while around 200 are on offer by the bottle.
