Raines Law Room is a speakeasy bar in Chelsea, named after a law passed in 1896 to curb the consumption of alcohol by New Yorkers. Behind a door buzzer is a windowless room that captures the feel of the 1920s with Chesterfield furniture, turn-of-the-century wall hangings and a few genuine antiques. The cocktail menu is full of perfectly mixed delights like the Garden Paloma (tequila, jalapeño agave, Perrier, grapefruit and a pinch of salt). To get one of the private tables surrounded by velvet sofas and black and gold curtains, you have to be there early.
