The Winkl-Keller is one of those quaint South Tyrolean wine taverns that you’d love to see preserved exactly as they are. Nestled among vineyards and orchards above Lake Kaltern, the Conci family runs their own vineyard, complete with a winery and distillery. The old vaulted cellar is a particularly lovely place to sit, where the history of the establishment is still embedded in the thick walls and the atmosphere is pleasantly unpretentious. The table is set with the classics of a good South Tyrolean “Marende”: spicy speck, smoked sausages, regional cheeses, Schüttelbrot, and farmhouse bread. These are best paired with a Vernatsch or Lagrein from their own production, or perhaps a Pinot Blanc. Here, it’s all about the simple, good things in life: wine, regional products, and the South Tyrolean tradition of cozy get-togethers. The Winkl-Keller is a particularly lovely spot in the early evening, when you’d like to enjoy a glass of wine and a hearty Brettljause after a day at Lake Kaltern.
