Castellion Hotels Galata Odaları is one of those hotels that doesn’t attempt to completely reinterpret Istanbul, but instead combines local elements with a modern touch. The blend of traditional details and a cosy, contemporary atmosphere is particularly successful. The green tiles bring a touch of classic Istanbul to the rooms, complemented by warm materials, soothing colours and details that make the rooms feel more homely than many of the often very neutrally designed boutique hotels. The small bay windows with built-in benches are particularly lovely. These little nooks really make the most of the rooms. With a coffee in the morning or in the evening just before bedtime, they quickly become the spots where you automatically linger for a moment, gazing out at the streets of Galata. The location works very well too. Galata, Karaköy, cafés, restaurants and many of the city’s attractions are right on the doorstep, and the value for money is spot on, particularly given the location and design. What is missing, however, is an area where you can simply sit for a while. A lounge or a small lounge area would suit the hotel well. The reception, on the other hand, is all the more delightful. It feels almost more like a small reception room than a classic hotel check-in, and it’s a place where you immediately notice that a great deal of attention has been paid to the atmosphere of the hotel.
