Louis C. Jacob

The Louis C. Jacob embodies Hamburg’s hotel history in a location that could scarcely be bettered. Perched high above the Elbe on the Elbchaussee, the hotel has stood here since 1791, and the famous lime-tree terrace remains the real star to this day. Max Liebermann stayed here for several weeks in 1902 and painted precisely this view through the lime trees towards the Elbe – one of the paintings now hangs in the hotel once again. Inside, the classic Hanseatic style continues: a grand hall, plenty of art, antiques, carpets and rooms that deliberately preserve the hotel’s history. With 84 rooms and suites, the Jacob is pleasantly intimate. The most beautiful rooms are, of course, those facing the Elbe, where large ships pass right past the window in the morning. A spot amongst the old lime trees is an absolute must, whether for breakfast or in the afternoon. Since 2025, the Jacob has been part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection, without having lost any of its very own character. The Louis C. Jacob is less a hotel for the new Hamburg than for the Hamburg that we so desperately want to preserve – because of the Elbe, its history and that fantastic terrace.
