The Hamburger Kunsthalle is one of the few museums where one can experience art from the Middle Ages right up through the present day. Three separate buildings, from 1869, 1919 und 1997, intermesh to give the Kunsthalle an edgy feeling of immediacy and tension. One senses that there is always something new to discover right around the corner: Old Masters, Romentics, Classic-Modernists, and since 1997 in the newly opened “Galerie der Gegenwart”, Pop Art, Fluxus, und Nouveaux–Realists. Also to be found are works of the big names of the sixties: Richard Serra, Yannis Kounellis, Gerhard Richter, Sigmar Polke, and Georg Baselitz.
